PostgreSQL Tuning: Cut Tgarchiveconsole Search Latency Now
I run Tgarchiveconsole on three different servers. One chokes. Two fly.
The difference? Not hardware. Configuration.
shared_buffers isn’t just a number. It’s how much RAM PostgreSQL grabs before touching disk. Set it too low, and every search hits the drive.
Too high, and the OS starts swapping. For 4GB RAM: 1GB. For 8GB: 2.5GB.
For 16GB: 4GB. Yes. Half your RAM is fine.
PostgreSQL handles it.
workmem controls per-query sorting and hashing. Tgarchiveconsole’s messagesearch endpoint dies here if it’s set to the default 4MB. I use 64MB on 8GB+ boxes.
On 4GB? 32MB. Anything lower and you’ll see “external merge” in logs. Translation: slow.
effectivecachesize tells the planner how much memory the OS + PostgreSQL can likely hold. Set it to 75% of total RAM. Not a guess.
A hard number.
You need pgstatstatements. Turn it on. Restart PostgreSQL.
Then run this one-liner:

That’s your top 5 expensive queries. Right now.
Look for channelstats with GROUP BY and no index on channelid. That’s your bottleneck.
Slow logs? Don’t skim them. Grep for duration: and sort numerically.

Search That Doesn’t Lie to You
I changed the /search endpoint. Not once. Not twice.
I broke it three times before it worked right.
Case-insensitive partial matching on sender username and caption? Just wrap the query in (?i) and use ILIKE if you’re on Postgres. Or LOWER() with LIKE if you’re stuck elsewhere.
Don’t overthink it.
You want ?has_media=true? Add it as an optional boolean param. Default it to None.
Then branch after the base query builds (don’t) rewrite the whole WHERE clause. Existing clients won’t flinch.
Here’s the phone number pattern I actually use: \b(?:\+?1[-.\s]?)?\(?([0-9]{3})\)?[-.\s]?([0-9]{3})[-.\s]?([0-9]{4})\b. Test it against +1 (555) 123-4567, 555.123.4567, and 5551234567. Nothing else.

Catastrophic backtracking is not theoretical. It’s your server going silent at 3 a.m. while your regex chews through 20MB of logs.
Inject it after full-text search, not inside it. Run it only on matched rows. Not the whole archive.
Does your regex engine support atomic groups? If not, walk away from that pattern. Seriously.
I’ve seen teams ship regex that took 47 seconds to scan one message. That’s not search. That’s punishment.

Test the filter with an empty has_media param first. Then false. Then true.
If any fail, stop.
Your users won’t tell you the search is slow. They’ll just stop using it.
So test like you hate downtime. Because you should.
Export Without the Panic

I broke my first export at 412,000 messages. Python crashed. Disk filled.
I stared at the error log like it owed me money.
CSV is fine until it isn’t. That’s why I swapped it out for JSONL (one) JSON object per line. Streams.
No memory bloat. You pipe it straight to disk or S3.
You don’t need a new system. Just change the generator. Yield each message as it’s fetched.
No list buildup. Done.
Timestamp-based pagination? Non-negotiable. The /export endpoint used to time out on big channels.
Now it accepts ?since=2023-09-15T14:22:00Z. Fetches in chunks. No more “504 Gateway Timeout” shame.
Want Excel? Add ?format=excel. Drop openpyxl in your requirements.
Modify the Flask route to check request.args.get('format') == 'excel'. Write rows directly. No Pandas overhead.
It works.
Validation checklist:
UTF-8 BOM? Strip it. (Excel adds it; most tools choke.)
Null bytes?
Filter them before writing. They break JSONL parsers. Media URLs?
Verify they’re absolute and not Telegram’s broken internal paths.
This isn’t theoretical. I ran it on a 1.2M-message group last week. Took 87 seconds.
Zero OOM errors.
If your exports still stall or corrupt, you’re probably skipping the streaming step. Or worse (you’re) still using pandas.to_csv() on raw query results. Don’t.

Lock It Down Before Someone Else Does
I disable debug mode first. Always. Every time.
If it’s on in production, you’re basically leaving the front door open with a sign that says “hack me.”
Rate limiting on /search? Non-negotiable. One IP.
Five requests per minute. Anything more and it drops the connection. (Yes, I’ve seen bots scrape 12K messages in under two hours.)
Rotate your JWT secrets weekly. Not monthly. Not “when we remember.” Weekly.
Set a calendar reminder. Miss one and you’ve got a token that could outlive your coffee habit.
/admin only responds to internal IPs. Not localhost. Not 127.0.0.1.
Real internal subnets. Like 10.0.0.0/8. If your Nginx config doesn’t enforce that, it’s not enforced.
Nginx is your shield here. Cap upload sizes at 5MB. Strip X-Forwarded-* headers before they hit Tgarchiveconsole.
Sanitize or drop them. No exceptions.
Storing Telegram API keys in env vars? That’s kindergarten security. Use HashiCorp Vault.
Period. Env vars leak in logs, process lists, and debug dumps.
